Why Door Closer Sizing Matters
An undersized door closer won't reliably latch the door — a code violation on fire-rated openings and a security failure on any secured door. An oversized closer creates excessive opening resistance, causes ADA non-compliance on accessible route doors, and accelerates wear on hinges, frames, and the closer itself. Getting the size right is one of the most important — and most frequently gotten wrong — decisions in commercial door hardware specification.
Door closer sizing in the United States follows the ANSI/BHMA A156.4 standard, which defines six closer sizes based on the closing force (measured in inch-pounds of spring torque) required to reliably close and latch a door under standardized conditions.
ANSI Closer Sizes 1–6: What They Mean
ANSI/BHMA A156.4 defines closer sizes by the minimum closing moment (torque) at specific door positions. The practical translation is door width capacity at standard door weights and conditions:

Important note: Most commercial door closers are multi-size adjustable — a single closer model can be adjusted to cover a range of sizes (e.g., Size 1–4 or Size 3–6). The size range is achieved by adjusting spring tension via an adjustment screw or power adjustment nut inside or on the closer body. Always verify the closer's adjustable range covers the required size before specifying.
The Three Variables That Determine Closer Size
1. Door Width
Door width is the primary sizing input. Wider doors require more torque to close because the closing force must act over a longer lever arm. The relationship is roughly linear — a 48" door requires approximately 33% more closing torque than a 36" door of the same weight.
Standard commercial door widths and their typical minimum closer sizes:
- Up to 32": Size 2–3
- 34–36": Size 3–4 (most common commercial door width)
- 38–42": Size 4–5
- 44–48": Size 5–6
- Over 48" (custom/oversized): Size 6, or heavy-duty floor closer / overhead concealed
2. Door Weight
Door weight directly affects the closing torque required. Heavier doors have greater inertia and require more spring force to accelerate them through the closing arc and deliver reliable latching velocity at the end of travel.
- Standard hollow metal door (1-3/4" HM, 3×7 opening): Approximately 70–80 lbs — Size 3–4
- Solid wood door (1-3/4"): Approximately 80–110 lbs depending on species and panel design — Size 4
- Heavy-duty hollow metal (insulated, 18-gauge or heavier): 100–150 lbs — Size 4–5
- Aluminum storefront door: 50–80 lbs — Size 3–4, but wind load is the more critical sizing factor
- Solid wood or oversized door (over 150 lbs): Size 5–6
3. Environmental Conditions
Environmental factors can require sizing up from what door width and weight alone would indicate:
- Exterior exposure / wind load: Exterior doors in exposed locations may need one size larger to overcome consistent wind pressure. Vestibule or building corner doors are most affected.
- Stack pressure (high-rise buildings): HVAC pressurization and stack effect in tall buildings creates significant differential pressure across doors, especially in stairwells. Size up one size and consult a mechanical engineer if stack pressure exceeds 5 lbs on the door face.
- Frequency of use: Very high-traffic doors (500+ daily cycles) benefit from sizing up to reduce wear on the closer mechanism, even if the base door width/weight would suggest a smaller size.
- Temperature extremes: Hydraulic fluid in door closers thickens in cold temperatures, effectively increasing resistance. Specify a closer with a temperature-compensating valve (available on most commercial-grade models) for exterior doors in cold climates.
Fire Door Closer Requirements
Fire-rated door assemblies have specific closer requirements under NFPA 80: Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives:
- All fire doors must have a self-closing device — a door closer is the standard solution
- The closer must be listed for use on fire door assemblies (UL Listed, UL 10C for positive pressure fire testing)
- The door must close and latch from any open position, including fully open (180° if the door travel allows)
- Minimum closing force is not explicitly specified in NFPA 80, but the closer must reliably latch the door against the positive pressure conditions of the UL 10C test
- In practice, fire door closers are typically sized at Size 4 minimum for 3×7 openings, regardless of door weight, to ensure reliable latching under fire conditions
ADA conflict on fire doors: NFPA 80 requires sufficient force to latch; ADA requires interior doors to open with no more than 5 lbf. Fire doors are exempt from the ADA opening force limit (2010 ADASAD Section 404.2.9, Exception 1). The solution for accessible corridors with fire doors is a magnetic hold-open device tied to the fire alarm — the door stays open during normal occupancy and releases to self-close on alarm activation.
ADA Opening Force and Closer Sizing
For non-fire-rated interior doors on accessible routes, the ADA maximum opening force of 5 lbf limits how much spring power the closer can be set to. This creates a practical constraint on closer sizing for interior accessible doors:
- Size 1–2 closers set to minimum spring power typically achieve 3–5 lbf on standard 36" interior doors
- Size 3 closers can often be adjusted to 5 lbf or below on 36" doors
- Size 4+ closers set to minimum power may exceed 5 lbf on narrow interior doors — verify with a door pressure gauge after installation
Always verify opening force with a calibrated push/pull gauge after installation and closer adjustment. Do not rely on spring size alone — friction from hinges, weatherstripping, and door seals adds to the total opening force measured at the door.
Closer Mounting Configurations
The mounting configuration affects the effective closing force delivered to the door and must be factored into sizing:

Parallel arm mount is the most common source of undersized-closer complaints in the field. Because the arm geometry is less mechanically efficient than regular arm, the effective closing force is reduced by approximately 20–30%. Always size up at least one ANSI size when specifying parallel arm mounting.
